The Vizhinjam International Seaport in Kerala is set to gain a direct rail connection with the Balaramapuram railway station, with work underway on a 10.7-km rail link designed to strengthen the port’s integration with India’s wider freight transportation network.

The project is being developed as an important last-mile connectivity link for Vizhinjam, one of India’s strategically significant deep-water transshipment ports. The rail connection is expected to provide an additional freight movement option between the port and the national railway network, complementing existing road connectivity.

The proposed alignment will connect Vizhinjam port with Balaramapuram station on the Thiruvananthapuram-Kanyakumari railway corridor. By creating a dedicated rail interface, the project is intended to facilitate the movement of containers and other cargo between the port and inland destinations without relying predominantly on road transportation.

The project assumes importance as Vizhinjam scales up its transshipment and cargo-handling operations. The port’s location close to major international shipping routes gives it potential to emerge as a significant maritime gateway for southern India, while efficient hinterland connectivity will be critical to converting maritime capacity into broader logistics benefits.

The rail link is expected to improve the movement of cargo towards Kerala and neighbouring states by connecting the port with the existing railway network.
