Cochin Shipyard and Singapore-based Synergy Marine Group have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to jointly pursue shipbuilding, ship repair and conversion projects in India.
The agreement provides a framework to combine Cochin Shipyard’s industrial capabilities with Synergy Marine’s experience in owners’ representation, engineering, project management and long-term technical management across shipbuilding and ship repair.
The collaboration will cover joint business development in ship repair, conversion, newbuilding, module fabrication and oil and gas projects. The two companies will also explore mutually agreed technical and strategic advisory support for Cochin Shipyard’s newbuilding activities, including project planning, execution and quality assurance.
Potential opportunities will be assessed based on client requirements and the suitability of the Indian yard’s facilities. The partnership is expected to bring Synergy’s experience in managing newbuilding and conversion projects into the Indian shipbuilding environment.
Synergy Marine has supported the delivery of more than 250 newbuilding projects. Its current newbuilding portfolio includes more than 150 vessels under construction across 20 shipyards in six countries.
The Singapore-based ship manager also has experience in vessel conversion projects, including the conversion of LNG carriers into floating storage and regasification units (FSRUs). Its conversion services cover feasibility studies, engineering design, equipment procurement, site supervision and commissioning, along with preparation for safe operations and subsequent technical management.
Synergy Marine manages more than 750 vessels across segments including bulk carriers, containerships, oil and chemical tankers, gas carriers and floating storage and regasification units.
Cochin Shipyard, a Government of India enterprise under the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, undertakes commercial and defence shipbuilding and repair projects for customers in India and overseas.
Synergy Marine Chief Executive Jesper Kristensen said the company’s role is to carry owners’ requirements through engineering and project execution into the operational life of a vessel. He said combining that experience with Cochin Shipyard’s industrial capabilities would provide a basis for developing shipbuilding and conversion opportunities in India.
Cochin Shipyard Chairman and Managing Director Jose V J said technically demanding projects for international customers form part of India’s maritime opportunity and require shipyard facilities supported by engineering expertise, project discipline and skilled personnel. He said Synergy’s newbuilding and conversion experience complements the shipyard’s capabilities.
The MoU creates a platform for the two companies to evaluate opportunities across newbuilding, conversion, repair and related maritime projects, while bringing together Synergy Marine’s project and operational expertise with Cochin Shipyard’s shipbuilding and repair infrastructure.
