Afcons Infrastructure Ltd. has secured a Letter of Acceptance (LoA) from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) for the construction of a desalinated water conveyance tunnel in Mumbai, with the contract valued at ₹1,918 crore, including GST and operation & maintenance components. The project will form a critical link in Mumbai’s first large-scale desalination initiative, aimed at strengthening the city’s long-term water security.
The project involves the design and construction of an underground tunnel connecting the proposed water pumping station at Manori to Charkop and further to Mahavir Nagar in Kandivali. The tunnel will transport desalinated water from the upcoming 200 MLD Manori desalination plant into Mumbai’s existing water distribution network and has been designed to support a future capacity expansion to 400 MLD.
The tunnel is expected to play a pivotal role in diversifying Mumbai’s water sources and reducing dependence on rainfall-fed reservoirs. Once operational, it will facilitate the seamless integration of desalinated water into the city’s supply system, enhancing resilience against recurring water shortages while supporting the growing demand of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.
