Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) has welcomed the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Amendment Act, 2026, notified by the Central Government on August 17, saying the reform will bring greater predictability to the mineral sector and strengthen long-term raw-material security.
The amendment provides greater clarity and uniformity in mineral taxation and levies while addressing pending retrospective levies. According to SAIL, the improved fiscal certainty is expected to enhance the viability of mining operations, encourage investment and support the development of captive mineral resources.
For SAIL, which operates substantial captive iron ore and coal mines, the reform is expected to facilitate more efficient utilisation and development of its mineral assets and support higher iron ore production. The company also said that improved viability of its captive mines could enable it to make additional iron ore available for sale in the domestic market, subject to the applicable regulatory framework.
The reform is expected to encourage higher investment and production across the mining sector, reduce import dependence and strengthen India’s mineral and energy security. Increased availability of indigenous iron ore could also support domestic steelmakers by strengthening raw-material supply chains and improving the competitiveness of mineral-based industries.
SAIL said it remains committed to the responsible and sustainable development of its mineral resources while strengthening captive raw-material security and contributing to greater domestic availability of iron ore.
