The first operational stretch of Pune Metro Line 3, connecting Hinjewadi and Balewadi, is nearing its launch, with the 12-station section expected to be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in September. The exact inauguration date has not yet been finalised, while authorities are completing the remaining preparations for passenger operations.
The initial section covers the stretch between Maan in Hinjewadi and Balewadi and has received provisional safety authorisation from the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS) on July 23. The clearance allows passenger services to begin on the approved section, subject to the formal launch.
According to officials, the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) is closely monitoring the 12 stations and completing the remaining works ahead of the proposed inauguration. The Prime Minister is likely to inaugurate the section virtually during the first half of September, although the schedule remains subject to confirmation.
PMRDA has also sought CMRS inspection for five additional stations. If the required safety clearance is received, the operational section could subsequently be extended to 17 stations. The remaining portion towards Shivajinagar will open after the necessary safety inspections and approvals are completed.
Pune Metro Line 3 is being developed as a 23.203-km elevated corridor with 23 stations, connecting Hinjewadi IT Park with Shivajinagar. The project has been undertaken by PMRDA under a public-private partnership model and is intended to provide a dedicated public transport link between Pune’s major IT hub and the city centre.
The Hinjewadi–Shivajinagar corridor is expected to provide an alternative to road-based commuting on one of Pune’s busiest traffic routes. The first section between Hinjewadi and Balewadi is particularly significant for daily commuters travelling to and from the city’s major IT and employment hub.
The first 12 stations approaching commercial operations, the project has entered its final stage before the launch of passenger services. The subsequent opening of additional stations and the remaining stretch towards Shivajinagar will further expand the connectivity benefits of Line 3 across the Pune metropolitan region.
