Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Haldia Bulk Terminal (HBT) developed by Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone at the Haldia Dock Complex in West Bengal, marking a significant boost to India’s eastern maritime infrastructure.
The newly commissioned facility is a fully automated dry bulk handling terminal with an annual cargo handling capacity of around 4 million metric tonnes. Located on the Hooghly River, the terminal has been designed to efficiently handle imported coal and other dry bulk commodities required by industries in eastern India.
Developed under a Design, Build, Finance, Operate and Transfer (DBFOT) concession model by HDC Bulk Terminal Ltd., construction of the project began in July 2023 and has now been successfully commissioned. The terminal features fully mechanised cargo handling systems and direct rail evacuation, enabling faster and more efficient cargo movement while reducing handling losses and environmental impact.
The project is expected to strengthen logistics efficiency across the eastern region, benefiting industries in West Bengal, Odisha and Jharkhand by improving bulk cargo handling and supporting smoother supply chains.
With the commissioning of the Haldia Bulk Terminal, India’s eastern seaboard gains a modern infrastructure asset that aligns with the government’s vision of reducing logistics costs, enhancing port efficiency and strengthening multimodal connectivity across key industrial corridors.
