Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari has announced plans for development projects worth ₹1 lakh crore in Nagpur, covering urban infrastructure, commercial facilities, transport and industrial development. Speaking at the Viksit Vidarbha Summit on Sunday, Gadkari said that planning and designs for most of the projects had been completed, with some initiatives receiving clearance recently.
One of the major proposals is the redevelopment of Kachipura, a slum locality in Ramdaspeth, for which projects worth ₹50,000 crore are planned. Gadkari said the redevelopment plan was almost complete and that he had finalised the related plans on Saturday. He also spoke about the proposed redevelopment of Cotton Market and Santra Market, two important commercial areas in the city.
The city’s commercial infrastructure is also set for an expansion. A road stretch from Mayo Hospital in Itwari to Shaheed Chowk is being developed into a four-lane road, with two markets planned along the route. A large textile market is also coming up at Empress Mill, opposite Geeta Mandir, where construction work has already reached two floors. An agro convention centre is being developed on Amravati Road with the support of Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis.
Gadkari also announced plans to shift Nagpur Central Jail outside the city, while a large private bus port is being constructed at Ajni to improve transport facilities.
Highlighting the city’s waste management initiatives, Gadkari said Nagpur is producing 16 tonnes of compressed biogas daily from segregated municipal waste using technology sourced from the Netherlands. He also shared details of Mother Dairy’s upcoming ₹1,000 crore plant at Butibori, which is expected to be inaugurated within the next two months. The facility will manufacture ice cream, paneer and cheese, with plans to export these products. Mother Dairy is expected to procure 50 lakh litres of milk per day, according to the minister.
He further highlighted the export potential of Vidarbha’s shrimp industry and said an international cargo hub in Nagpur could help local producers access overseas markets, including Dubai and Singapore. Gadkari said better cargo connectivity would provide the region’s seafood producers with greater access to international trade.
The proposed projects form part of the wider development plan outlined for Nagpur, with investments covering urban redevelopment, market infrastructure, transport facilities, manufacturing and logistics.
