Larsen & Toubro’s (L&T) Renewables business has secured a major order valued between ₹5,000 crore and ₹10,000 crore to develop three Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) projects for a client in the Middle East. The projects will collectively provide 6 GWh of energy storage capacity, strengthening L&T’s position in the region’s rapidly expanding energy-storage and renewable-energy infrastructure market.
The three projects will each feature a four-hour BESS, enabling electricity to be stored during periods of lower demand and dispatched during peak-demand hours. This energy-shifting capability is expected to support grid stability and facilitate greater integration of renewable energy into the power system.
In addition to the battery storage facilities, L&T’s scope includes grid interconnections, pooling substations and underground cables. The projects will deploy advanced BESS solutions incorporating liquid-cooling technology, which is designed to enable higher power density while improving safety and extending the operational life of the storage systems.
The projects will also involve stringent requirements relating to plant performance, workforce mobilisation, safety, quality and execution timelines. L&T said the order reflects the confidence of clients in its engineering and project-management capabilities and further strengthens its role as an EPC player in the growing energy-storage sector.
The latest award comes as countries across the Middle East accelerate investments in renewable energy and grid modernisation. Large-scale battery storage is increasingly being deployed alongside solar and other renewable generation to address intermittency, shift electricity availability from off-peak to peak periods and improve overall grid flexibility.
The order further expands L&T’s international energy-transition portfolio and follows a series of major Middle East contracts secured by the company in August. The company had also recently announced an ultra-mega order worth more than ₹15,000 crore for gas compression facilities and associated infrastructure in the region.
