The Centre has released a “mother sanction” of ₹10,021.42 crore to 12 states under the Pradhan Mantri Awaas Yojana-Gramin (PMAY-G), in a major push toward achieving the government’s ‘Housing for All’ target by March 2029.

The sanction was released through video conferencing to Assam, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Kerala, Punjab, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, and Uttar Pradesh.

Union Rural Development Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan said that against the overall target of 4.95 crore houses under PMAY-G, approvals for 3.91 crore houses have already been granted, while construction of more than 3.05 crore houses has been completed so far.

Officials stated that the latest sanction follows an earlier release of ₹11,121 crore for FY27, taking the overall sanctioned support under the scheme to over ₹21,000 crore.

Rohit Kansal, Secretary, Ministry of Rural Development, said the housing target for the current financial year is nearly three times higher than last year and will be implemented through coordinated efforts between the Centre and states.

During the review, Shivraj Singh Chouhan emphasised that the objective of PMAY-G is not merely to construct houses but to provide integrated rural living infrastructure including roads, electricity, drinking water, LPG connections, and sanitation facilities.

The minister also highlighted that nearly 75 per cent of the sanctioned houses under PMAY-G are either registered in the name of women or under joint ownership, strengthening women’s social and financial security in rural areas.

Officials noted that several states have introduced initiatives such as helplines, grievance redressal systems, rainwater harvesting, self-help group livelihood programmes, and mason training schemes to accelerate implementation of the housing programme.

The minister urged states to address land availability issues faced by poor households, expedite pending approvals, and ensure timely utilisation of funds. He also directed states lagging behind their 2024-25 and 2025-26 targets to complete approvals by June 30, 2026.

PMAY-G, launched in 2016, is one of India’s largest rural housing schemes aimed at replacing kutcha houses with pucca homes equipped with basic amenities. The scheme has been extended until March 2029 as part of the government’s long-term rural housing expansion strategy.

The programme is expected to continue playing a major role in improving rural infrastructure, living standards, and social welfare across the country over the coming years.
