India and Australia have moved closer to finalising a Defence Support Arrangement (DSA) as both countries deepen strategic, maritime, and defence cooperation across the Indo-Pacific region amid evolving regional security dynamics.
The development follows high-level discussions held during the 9th India–Australia Defence Policy Talks, where both sides reviewed the progress of bilateral defence engagements and explored new areas of collaboration.
According to officials, the proposed Defence Support Arrangement is expected to strengthen logistical cooperation between the armed forces of the two countries by improving access to maintenance support, supplies, and operational assistance during joint exercises, deployments, and maritime activities.
Both nations also reviewed the implementation of existing defence cooperation frameworks and discussed measures to expand interoperability, military exchanges, defence industry partnerships, and joint operational capabilities.
Maritime security emerged as a major focus area during the discussions, with both sides emphasising the importance of maintaining a free, open, inclusive, and rules-based Indo-Pacific region.
Officials highlighted the growing scope of naval cooperation between India and Australia through joint exercises, information sharing, maritime domain awareness initiatives, and coordinated efforts to strengthen regional security architecture.
The two countries also explored opportunities to expand collaboration in areas such as defence technology, military education, cyber security, emerging technologies, and defence industrial cooperation.
India and Australia have significantly strengthened their strategic partnership in recent years through mechanisms such as the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, the Quad framework, and increasing defence engagements across the Indo-Pacific.
Defence cooperation between the two countries has expanded steadily through joint military exercises including AUSINDEX, Malabar, and other bilateral and multilateral engagements involving naval, air force, and army units.
Officials noted that closer defence collaboration reflects shared concerns regarding maritime security, supply chain resilience, regional stability, and the protection of critical sea lanes that support global trade and economic activity.
The proposed Defence Support Arrangement is expected to further improve operational coordination and logistical integration between the two countries’ defence forces while supporting faster and more effective deployment capabilities during joint missions and exercises.
Industry and strategic affairs experts believe the deepening India–Australia defence partnership will strengthen regional security cooperation and contribute to broader efforts aimed at enhancing stability, deterrence, and strategic balance across the Indo-Pacific region.
