Ambala–Shamli Expressway Construction Progresses Rapidly, Targeted for December 2026 Completion

Construction work underway on the Ambala–Shamli Expressway to improve regional and inter-state connectivity
Ambala–Shamli Expressway construction gathers pace, with completion targeted by December 2026.

Construction of the 121-km Ambala–Shamli Expressway is progressing at a fast pace and is expected to be completed by December 2026, according to Haryana Cabinet Minister Anil Vij. The project is being implemented to strengthen regional connectivity and reduce travel time across key urban and inter-state corridors.

The expressway will link Ambala with Shamli and will further extend towards Delhi, where it is planned to connect with the Dehradun–Delhi Expressway. Once operational, the corridor is expected to significantly improve road access between Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and the national capital region.

The minister also reviewed the progress of the Ambala–Mohali Expressway and noted that construction work on this stretch is advancing steadily. The project is nearing completion and is expected to provide faster and smoother connectivity to Chandigarh, Mohali and surrounding urban areas.

During a review meeting with the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) Ambala Project Director PK Sinha and other officials, Vij directed that the Ambala Ring Road be completed at the earliest. He highlighted that the ring road would enable through-traffic from other states to bypass the city, easing congestion within Ambala and reducing pressure on major city roads.

Local infrastructure issues associated with the ring road were also discussed. These included water drainage concerns in Shahpur and Bara villages and the need to ensure proper access routes for residents of Sapera village.

In addition, the minister reviewed proposals to improve road connectivity by linking Ambala Cantonment with the Panchkula–Saharanpur Highway and instructed officials to prepare a detailed plan for the same.

Other projects examined during the review included the installation of decorative lighting along GT Road from Ambala Cantonment Railway Station to Mohra village, as well as improved access to the Shaheed Smarak being developed along the national highway. Vij emphasised the need to plan escalators, an overbridge or a subway in view of the anticipated daily footfall once the memorial and the adjoining science centre become operational.

The proposal for constructing a flyover at Machhonda village was also taken up, with directions issued for a joint site inspection by concerned departments so that work can commence without further delay.
