Afcons Infrastructure Limited has secured a ₹5,301 crore contract from Vadhvan Port Project Limited (VPPL) for the construction of a 10.14-km-long breakwater at the upcoming Vadhvan Port in Maharashtra, one of India’s most ambitious maritime infrastructure projects.

The contract was awarded through a Letter of Award issued by VPPL. Upon completion, the structure is expected to become the world’s second-longest breakwater, providing critical protection to the greenfield deep-draft port being developed at Vadhvan in Palghar district.

The project marks a major milestone in the development of Vadhvan Port, which is being developed by VPPL, a special purpose vehicle led by the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority. The port is envisioned as India’s largest public port and is expected to significantly enhance the country’s container-handling and maritime trade capabilities.

Commenting on the development, Afcons Managing Director S. Paramasivan said the award represents one of the world’s landmark marine infrastructure projects and highlights India’s growing capability in executing complex infrastructure works on a global scale. Executive Chairman Krishnamurthy Subramanian noted that the project reflects Afcons’ expertise in delivering large-scale marine infrastructure and would support India’s ambition of emerging as a global maritime hub.

The announcement was well received by investors. Shares of Afcons Infrastructure rose more than 9 per cent during trading on Wednesday after the company disclosed the contract win.

Vadhvan Port is being developed at an estimated cost of around ₹76,220 crore and is expected to become one of the world’s largest container ports upon completion. The breakwater is a key component of the project, designed to create a protected harbour capable of handling large vessels and supporting future cargo growth.

The award further strengthens Afcons Infrastructure’s position in the marine engineering segment and adds another marquee project to its portfolio of large-scale infrastructure developments across India and overseas.
