West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari has announced that the state government has identified around 2,000 acres of land for the proposed second airport for the Kolkata metropolitan region. The project is aimed at meeting the city’s growing air traffic demand and complementing the existing Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport.
Addressing a public event, the Chief Minister said the government is also moving ahead with the expansion of airports at Balurghat, Malda and Purulia to strengthen regional air connectivity across the state. These projects form part of the government’s broader infrastructure development strategy and are expected to improve access to north and western districts of West Bengal.
Adhikari said the proposed second airport is planned near Kalyani in Nadia district, where the identified land will facilitate the development of a greenfield airport. The new facility is expected to ease congestion at Kolkata’s existing airport while supporting future passenger and cargo traffic growth.
The Chief Minister added that alongside the airport projects, the state government is focusing on expanding transport infrastructure to improve connectivity and support economic development. The proposed airport developments are expected to boost regional mobility, attract investment and strengthen West Bengal’s aviation network.
