West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari has laid the foundation stone for Amit Metaliks Ltd’s ₹4,000 crore greenfield integrated steel manufacturing project at Raghunathpur in Purulia district, marking a significant investment in the state’s steel and manufacturing sector.
The proposed facility will have an annual production capacity of 1.2 million tonnes (MTPA) and is expected to commence commercial operations by 2029. The integrated complex will include a pellet plant, direct reduced iron (DRI) unit, rolling mill, submerged electric arc furnace (SEAF), forging and brick manufacturing units, along with a 145-MW captive power plant.
The project is expected to create more than 5,000 employment opportunities, including direct and indirect jobs, providing a potential boost to industrial activity in Purulia. The investment is also expected to support the development of ancillary businesses and services around the manufacturing facility.
The Raghunathpur location is part of the wider industrial development taking place in the region. The area has been emerging as an industrial cluster with investments across steel, engineering and manufacturing, providing an ecosystem for large-scale industrial projects.
For Amit Metaliks, the greenfield facility represents a major expansion of its manufacturing footprint. The company is the flagship entity of the Amit Alliance, which has interests across steel, mining and infrastructure. The new project is expected to strengthen its integrated steelmaking capabilities and expand its production base.
The project also assumes significance for West Bengal’s industrialisation agenda. At the foundation-stone ceremony, the state government emphasised the need to attract manufacturing investment, generate local employment and develop supporting industrial infrastructure. The government has indicated that employment generation will be an important consideration in its evolving industrial incentive framework.
The integrated nature of the facility is particularly important for the steel value chain. Combining raw-material processing, ironmaking, steel production and downstream operations within a single industrial complex can help improve production efficiency, supply-chain coordination and resource utilisation.
The project is also expected to strengthen Purulia’s economic base by creating opportunities beyond the plant itself. Large steel facilities typically generate demand for logistics, transportation, equipment maintenance, engineering services, construction, material handling and other supporting activities.
The ₹4,000 crore investment comes alongside other industrial projects being developed in the region, reinforcing Raghunathpur’s potential as an important manufacturing destination in southern West Bengal.
1.2 MTPA of planned production capacity, a 145-MW captive power facility and more than 5,000 expected jobs, the Amit Metaliks project could become a significant contributor to Purulia’s industrial development. Its progress towards commercial production by 2029 will be closely watched as West Bengal seeks to expand its manufacturing base and attract larger private-sector investments.
