Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone-operated Vizhinjam International Seaport has become the fastest port in India to handle 2 million TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units), achieving the milestone within just 18 months of commencing operations.

The achievement marks a major milestone for India’s maritime infrastructure sector and highlights Vizhinjam’s rapid emergence as a globally competitive deep-water transshipment hub.

The port began trial operations in July 2024 and was officially dedicated to the nation by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in May 2025. Vizhinjam had earlier crossed the 1 million TEU milestone in August 2025, reflecting the rapid scale-up in cargo handling operations.

According to officials, the port has handled more than 950 vessels since operations began, including 67 Ultra Large Container Vessels (ULCVs), among the largest cargo ships operating globally. The port has also berthed some of the world’s biggest container vessels, including MSC Irina.

Industry experts noted that Vizhinjam’s strategic location gives it a significant advantage in international maritime trade. The port is situated just around 10 nautical miles from the busy east-west global shipping corridor connecting Asia, Europe, the Middle East, and Africa.

The port’s natural deep draft of nearly 20 metres enables it to handle next-generation mega container vessels with minimal dredging requirements, improving operational efficiency and reducing vessel turnaround time.

Officials stated that Vizhinjam’s rapid growth reflects increasing confidence among global shipping lines in the port’s infrastructure, automation capabilities, and transshipment potential.

The development is also expected to reduce India’s dependence on foreign ports such as Colombo, Singapore, and Dubai for handling transshipment cargo, helping retain a larger share of container traffic within the country.

Phase II expansion of the port is currently underway with an investment of around ₹16,000 crore. The expansion is expected to substantially increase cargo handling capacity and strengthen India’s position in global maritime logistics and container trade networks.

Industry analysts believe Vizhinjam could emerge as one of the most strategically important ports in the Indian Ocean region as India continues expanding its maritime infrastructure and global trade connectivity.
