Uttar Pradesh has unveiled an ambitious long-term urban mobility roadmap, with the Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation (UPMRC) announcing plans to build a 1,575-kilometre metro network across the state by 2047. The vision, presented by UPMRC Managing Director Sushil Kumar during the “Viksit Uttar Pradesh for Viksit Bharat @ 2047” seminar, outlines one of the largest metro expansion programmes proposed by any Indian state.
Under the plan, the first phase will prioritize major capacity additions in the state’s three operational metro cities. Lucknow is set to see a 225 km network expansion, while Kanpur and Agra will add 200 km and 100 km respectively. These extensions aim to strengthen connectivity in rapidly growing urban clusters and reduce dependency on road-based transport.
UPMRC also plans to extend metro services to emerging urban hubs, with 150 km of corridors proposed for Noida–Greater Noida, Varanasi, and Prayagraj. Additionally, districts such as Gorakhpur, Ayodhya, and Meerut are slated to receive 50 km metro networks each, marking a significant push to expand modern mass transit into Tier-2 and Tier-3 regions.
According to the roadmap, around 790 km of the envisioned network is targeted for completion by 2035, laying the groundwork for the broader 2047 expansion goal. Kumar highlighted the financial feasibility of the project, noting that the state will allocate around ₹1,040 crore annually for the initial 525 km phase.
He also emphasized UPMRC’s strong operational record, stating that the corporation’s existing metro systems continue to demonstrate high efficiency and reliability, strengthening confidence in the long-term expansion plan.
The envisioned 1,575 km network is expected to reshape urban mobility across Uttar Pradesh, supporting economic growth while offering faster, cleaner, and more inclusive public transport for millions of residents.
