Time Technoplast Limited has secured an order worth ₹2.48 crore to supply a complete Type IV Composite Cylinder Hydrogen Storage Cascade and Fuel Delivery System for NTPC’s hydrogen-powered locomotive pilot project. The order has been awarded through EPC partner Concorde Control Systems.
The order marks another step in Time Technoplast’s expansion into hydrogen storage and mobility applications, particularly as India explores hydrogen as a cleaner fuel for heavy transportation. The company will provide the specialised storage and fuel-delivery system required for NTPC’s railway pilot project.
The project involves the use of Type IV composite cylinders, which are designed for high-pressure hydrogen storage while offering lower weight compared with conventional metal-cylinder solutions. Such systems are an important component of hydrogen-powered mobility because efficient and lightweight storage is critical to the overall performance of fuel-cell vehicles.
The NTPC locomotive pilot also highlights the growing interest in hydrogen-powered rail transportation in India. Hydrogen fuel-cell technology can potentially reduce dependence on conventional diesel traction on routes where railway electrification may be difficult or economically less attractive.
For Time Technoplast, the order provides an opportunity to demonstrate its hydrogen-storage technology in an operational railway application. The company has already developed capabilities in composite cylinders and hydrogen storage systems and has received regulatory approval for manufacturing Type IV composite cylinders for hydrogen-powered fuel-cell applications, including mobility and other specialised uses.
The company’s hydrogen business forms part of its broader strategy to expand into advanced composite-cylinder applications beyond its traditional industrial packaging and gas-storage businesses. Hydrogen storage is emerging as a potential growth area as India develops infrastructure around green hydrogen, fuel-cell mobility and clean industrial applications.
The order is relatively small in monetary terms compared with Time Technoplast’s overall business, but its strategic significance lies in the technology and application involved. The company will be participating in a pilot-scale railway hydrogen project, giving it an opportunity to build experience that could support future commercial deployments.
According to the company’s order disclosure, the system is to be supplied within four months from the order date of August 13, 2026.
The development comes as India continues to examine hydrogen-powered mobility as part of its broader clean-energy transition. Railways, heavy commercial vehicles, buses and other high-utilisation transport segments are among the applications where hydrogen could potentially complement battery-electric solutions.
For the wider hydrogen ecosystem, projects such as NTPC’s locomotive pilot are important because they can help establish the requirements for hydrogen production, storage, dispensing and vehicle integration. Successful pilot projects could eventually create demand for a larger network of hydrogen storage and refuelling infrastructure.
Time Technoplast’s latest order therefore represents more than a conventional equipment supply contract. While the ₹2.48 crore order is modest in value, it strengthens the company’s presence in the emerging hydrogen-mobility value chain and gives it an opportunity to participate in India’s efforts to develop practical applications for hydrogen-powered transportation.
