Tata Communications has announced an investment of ₹4,350 crore (USD 400–450 million) to build approximately 10,000 km of AI-ready fibre connectivity infrastructure across India. The proposed network, named the AI Super Highway, will connect major data centre hubs and strengthen high-speed, low-latency data transmission to support the growing requirements of artificial intelligence (AI) and cloud computing.
The project will be developed in three phases, beginning with the Mumbai-Pune-Hyderabad-Chennai corridor, a key route for hyperscale data centres and AI infrastructure. Subsequent phases will extend the network to emerging data centre locations, including Visakhapatnam, Bhubaneswar, Jamnagar and Gujarat International Finance Tec-City (GIFT City).
The new infrastructure is expected to add around 6 petabits per second (Pbps) of network capacity between FY2030 and FY2036. Tata Communications currently operates a network with a capacity of 1.25 Pbps, of which approximately 70–80% is utilised. The planned investment will be financed through the company’s operating cash flows.
The network will integrate with Tata Communications’ global backbone and connect domestic data centre clusters with international cable landing stations. This will enable data movement between Indian AI hubs and international markets, supporting organisations that require high-capacity connectivity across geographically distributed computing facilities.
Global hyperscalers, neocloud providers, AI platforms, digital-native businesses, Global Capability Centres (GCCs) and enterprises are among the intended users. The infrastructure is designed to support bandwidth-intensive AI workloads that require consistent performance, network resilience and low latency.
Ganesh Lakshminarayanan, Managing Director and CEO of Tata Communications, said the domestic data centre-to-data centre connectivity market could exceed USD 1 billion over the medium term. He added that anchor customer commitments and contracted demand are increasingly supporting the company’s network expansion plans.
Rupesh Chokshi, Chief Product and Technology Officer, Executive Vice President and Global Business Head of Network Services at Tata Communications, highlighted the importance of connectivity alongside computing capacity in the development of AI infrastructure. The company’s AI Network Fabric is intended to provide the speed, capacity and resilience required to scale AI workloads.
The investment comes amid substantial expansion in India’s data centre and cloud infrastructure. As AI adoption increases, reliable connectivity between computing facilities is becoming increasingly important for transferring large datasets and supporting distributed workloads. Tata Communications plans to build on its existing domestic and international network infrastructure to address this demand and strengthen India’s links with global digital ecosystems.
