In a move aimed at modernising train operations and enhancing field safety, Southern Railway has launched three in-house developed digital applications that will replace manual processes, improve operational coordination and promote paperless working across its network. The applications e-TSR (Electronic Train Signal Register), Railway Block Management System (RBMS) and DOST (Delivering Occupational Safety on Track) were developed by Southern Railway’s own technical teams.
The e-TSR application digitises the conventional Train Signal Register maintained at railway stations by automatically recording train movement data through signal loggers. By eliminating manual entries, the system is expected to improve the accuracy of operational records while reducing the scope for human error. It has also been designed to function across different signalling systems and supports manual operation whenever required.
The Railway Block Management System (RBMS) provides a digital platform for planning, approving and monitoring engineering and maintenance blocks. The application offers features such as real-time dashboards, OTP-based authentication, role-based access and MIS reports, enabling better coordination among operating, engineering and signalling departments. It is also integrated with the e-TSR platform to ensure seamless execution of block operations.
To improve the safety of track maintenance personnel, Southern Railway has also introduced DOST, a GPS-enabled application that combines live train movement information with the location of field staff. The app generates audio, visual and vibration alerts when trains approach work sites and includes features such as SOS alerts, incident reporting and multilingual notifications to strengthen on-track safety.
According to Southern Railway, the three applications are part of its broader digital transformation programme and are expected to make railway operations safer, smarter and more efficient while reducing reliance on paper-based processes.
