Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal has called for a technology-driven transformation of India’s maritime security architecture, stressing that the country’s rapidly expanding port network and growing role in global trade demand security systems that are resilient, integrated and capable of addressing emerging cyber threats. He made the remarks while inaugurating the 2nd National Port Security Conference 2026 in New Delhi.
Highlighting the changing nature of maritime risks, Sonowal said that cyberattacks, drone intrusions, vulnerabilities in digital infrastructure and disruptions to global supply chains have elevated port security from an operational concern to a strategic national priority. He emphasised that ports should be assessed not only on cargo handling efficiency but also on their ability to withstand evolving security challenges and ensure uninterrupted trade operations.
The minister urged port authorities and maritime stakeholders to accelerate the adoption of advanced technologies, strengthen institutional coordination and build a future-ready security ecosystem. He also highlighted the proposed Bureau of Port Security (BoPS) under the Merchant Shipping Act, 2025, which is expected to provide a dedicated framework for regulatory oversight, standardised security practices and improved coordination among maritime agencies.
Sonowal noted that digital initiatives such as e-Samudra, the Maritime Single Window and the One Nation One Port Process are transforming India’s ports into smart, technology-enabled gateways. He stressed that these digital advancements must be supported by equally robust cyber security measures to safeguard critical infrastructure, reinforce supply chain resilience and strengthen India’s ambition of becoming a leading global maritime power.
