State-owned engineering and infrastructure company Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL) has emerged as the lowest bidder for a ₹2,977 crore contract awarded by NMDC Limited for the development of a 10 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) integrated iron ore handling facility at Visakhapatnam Port.
The project forms part of NMDC’s plans to strengthen its iron ore logistics and export infrastructure. The proposed facility will be developed on an engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) basis and will handle the transportation, storage and mechanised movement of iron ore cargo.
According to the contract details, RVNL will be responsible for designing, engineering, procuring, constructing, testing and commissioning the facility. The scope also includes associated infrastructure required for efficient cargo handling operations within the port premises.
The new terminal is intended to improve the evacuation and handling of iron ore produced by NMDC’s mining operations. By introducing modern mechanised systems, the facility is expected to reduce turnaround time, improve operational efficiency and support higher cargo volumes.
Located at Visakhapatnam Port, one of India’s largest cargo-handling ports, the project is expected to strengthen the logistics chain connecting mining regions with domestic and international markets. The facility will play a key role in supporting NMDC’s future production growth plans and enhancing export capabilities.
The contract adds to RVNL’s growing portfolio beyond railway infrastructure, reflecting the company’s increasing presence in ports, logistics, mining and industrial infrastructure projects.
Once completed, the 10 MTPA ore handling facility will provide dedicated infrastructure for bulk cargo movement and support the expansion of mineral transportation capacity through India’s eastern coast.
