A proposal to upgrade the Patiala–Patran stretch of State Highway-10 in Punjab into a four-lane corridor has gained momentum, with a Member of Parliament urging the Centre to approve the project. The request highlights the need to address rising traffic congestion, safety concerns and increasing economic activity along the route.
The approximately 75-km stretch, connecting Patiala, Samana, Ghagga and Patran, currently operates as a two-lane highway, which is considered inadequate for the growing volume of passenger and freight traffic.
Union Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari has indicated that such projects can be taken up for central support only after a formal proposal is submitted by the state government, under frameworks like the national infrastructure planning mechanism. This places the responsibility on the Punjab government to initiate the process.
The proposed four-laning is expected to improve road safety, reduce travel time and enhance connectivity between Punjab, Haryana and Delhi. The corridor plays a crucial role in movement of agricultural produce, regional trade and daily commuting, making its upgrade important for the broader Malwa region.
If approved, the project could significantly boost regional infrastructure, streamline logistics and support economic growth, while addressing long-standing concerns over accidents and congestion on the existing route.
