Odisha to strengthen its aviation network with a new Bhubaneswar terminal, Puri airport, and revived airstrips enhancing connectivity and tourism.

Odisha’s aviation sector is set for a major transformation with several infrastructure projects on the horizon. The state government, along with the Airports Authority of India (AAI), has unveiled plans that include the development of a new terminal building at Biju Patnaik International Airport in Bhubaneswar, the establishment of a greenfield airport at Puri, and the revival of a number of unused airstrips across the state.
The new terminal at Bhubaneswar is expected to ease congestion and cater to the rising number of domestic and international passengers, positioning the city as an important aviation hub in eastern India. Meanwhile, the proposed Puri airport will enhance connectivity to the iconic pilgrimage destination, which attracts millions of devotees and tourists every year, significantly boosting religious and cultural tourism.
In addition, efforts are underway to make several dormant airstrips operational once again. These upgraded facilities are likely to support regional air services under the UDAN scheme, improve intra-state connectivity, and open new opportunities for business and tourism in smaller towns.
Officials noted that these aviation projects will not only improve Odisha’s air connectivity but also strengthen its role in regional trade, tourism, and investment, aligning with the state’s long-term growth vision.
