The Maharashtra Government has approved an ambitious proposal to construct 145 rail flyovers over the next three years as part of its plan to make the state free from railway level crossings. The announcement was made by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis during the inauguration of nine rail infrastructure projects developed by the Maharashtra Rail Infrastructure Development Corporation (MahaRail).
According to the Chief Minister, the approved programme includes the construction of 65 Road Over Bridges (ROBs) at existing railway level crossings and around 80 additional flyovers aimed at improving road connectivity and traffic movement. The initiative is intended to enhance commuter safety, reduce congestion and eliminate delays caused by railway gates across the state.
Fadnavis said the state government will implement the programme in coordination with the Ministry of Railways and the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways. MahaRail has been entrusted with executing the projects, with the corporation assuring the government that all 145 flyovers will be completed within the stipulated three-year period.
The announcement follows the inauguration of nine rail infrastructure projects worth ₹484 crore, comprising four Road Over Bridges (ROBs), four underpasses and one Road Under Bridge (RUB) across several districts in Maharashtra. These projects are expected to improve rail-road connectivity, facilitate uninterrupted traffic movement and strengthen transportation infrastructure in the state.
Highlighting the importance of the initiative, the Chief Minister noted that railway level crossings continue to pose significant safety risks and contribute to traffic bottlenecks. The large-scale construction of grade-separated crossings is expected to reduce accidents, improve travel efficiency and support Maharashtra’s long-term infrastructure development goals while moving towards a railway gate-free road network.
