Larsen & Toubro (L&T) has secured major design-and-build orders for two key systems packages under Dhaka Metro Line 1 in Bangladesh. The contracts cover track works, electrical systems, signalling, telecommunications and platform screen doors for the country’s first underground metro rail project.

Awarded by Dhaka Mass Transit Company Limited (DMTCL), the orders comprise Contract Package CP09 for track works and electrical systems, and CP10 for signalling, telecommunications and platform screen doors. Under L&T’s order classification, a major order falls within the range of ₹5,000 crore to ₹10,000 crore. The company has not disclosed the exact contract value.

Under CP09, L&T will work alongside its Japanese partner, Sumitomo Corporation, to design, procure, install, test and commission the complete track infrastructure and electrical systems across the corridor. The scope includes power supply and distribution, traction substations, overhead catenary systems and associated electrical facilities.

CP10 covers the deployment of signalling and telecommunications systems, along with platform screen doors across the entire network. These systems will form a critical part of the metro’s operational infrastructure, supporting train control, communication and passenger safety.

Dhaka Metro Line 1 is planned as an approximately 31-km mass transit network comprising the Airport Route, connecting Kamalapur with the airport, and the Purbachal Route, extending from Natun Bazar to Purbachal Terminal. The project includes 19 stations and a depot at Pitalganj and is funded by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).

The latest contracts build on L&T’s earlier involvement in Bangladesh’s metro rail development. The company delivered the integrated railway systems package for Dhaka Metro Line 6, the country’s first metro rail corridor, which is now in commercial operation. L&T is also executing an integrated rail systems project for the Jakarta Metro.

Ramkumar S, Senior Vice President and Head of Transportation Infrastructure at L&T, said the repeat orders from DMTCL reflect the company’s experience in delivering large-scale integrated urban transit projects. He highlighted its work on Line 6 and the importance of coordinating multiple systems, original equipment manufacturers and project stakeholders during execution.

The awards expand L&T’s international transportation infrastructure portfolio and reinforce its role in delivering integrated metro systems, covering both electrical and mechanical infrastructure and essential operational technologies.
