Larsen & Toubro (L&T) has received a Limited Notice to Proceed (LNTP) from DVC CIL Power Private Ltd (DVCCIL) for the main plant package of the 1,600 MW Chandrapura thermal power project in Jharkhand.

The project is being developed by DVCCIL, a joint venture between Damodar Valley Corporation (DVC) and Coal India Ltd. The Chandrapura project will comprise two 800 MW ultra-supercritical power generating units.

L&T Energy CarbonLite Solutions, a business vertical of L&T, will undertake the main plant package for the project. Its scope covers the design, engineering, manufacturing, supply, erection, testing and commissioning of boilers, steam turbines, generators and electrostatic precipitators.

The company will also execute associated mechanical, electrical, control and instrumentation and civil works for the power plant.

The LNTP represents the initial approval for L&T to proceed with the project. DVCCIL will issue the full Notice to Proceed after the project receives the requisite environmental clearances and the LNTP period is completed.

The Chandrapura project will use ultra-supercritical technology, which is designed to provide higher thermal efficiency and lower specific emissions compared with conventional thermal power generation technologies.

Once commissioned, the 1,600 MW project will add significant generation capacity in Jharkhand and support the growing electricity requirements associated with industrial expansion and economic activity.

The project is also part of the continued collaboration between DVC and Coal India in power generation. The two state-owned companies had formed DVCCIL to jointly develop the Chandrapura expansion, with the project planned at the existing Chandrapura Thermal Power Station.

L&T said the order strengthens its association with major public-sector power utilities and reinforces its presence in India’s thermal power sector. The company’s Energy CarbonLite Solutions business combines engineering, manufacturing and project execution capabilities for power and low-carbon process solutions.

L&T has classified the Chandrapura project as a ‘Major’ order, a category covering projects valued between ₹5,000 crore and ₹10,000 crore. The exact contract value has not been disclosed.
