The Kerala government is expecting investments of around ₹10,000 crore in a series of maritime sector projects, including initiatives involving the Tata Group, as part of its strategy to strengthen the state’s shipbuilding, ship repair and port-led industrial ecosystem. The announcement was made by Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan, who said the government is working to attract investments that will complement the growth of the Vizhinjam International Seaport and other maritime infrastructure projects.
Speaking at a press interaction, the Chief Minister said the state is facilitating a joint venture between state-owned Malabar Cements Ltd. and Artson Engineering Ltd., a Tata Projects subsidiary, for a shipbuilding project. He clarified that the ₹10,000 crore figure represents the total investment expected across multiple maritime projects and investors, and not a single investment proposal from the Tata Group.
According to the state government, the proposed investments are aimed at developing an integrated maritime ecosystem encompassing shipbuilding, ship repair, marine engineering and allied industries. Kerala believes the expansion of the Vizhinjam port and associated industrial infrastructure will create significant opportunities for manufacturing, logistics and employment in the state.
The clarification comes after reports suggesting that the Tata Group had proposed a ₹10,000-crore shipbuilding facility in Kerala. The company subsequently stated that no such standalone proposal had been submitted. The state government later explained that the investment estimate referred to the overall maritime development pipeline involving multiple projects, including the proposed joint venture with Tata Projects’ subsidiary.
