The iconic Kalka-Shimla narrow-gauge railway route is set to get a hydrogen-powered toy train, adding a clean-energy option to one of India’s most recognised heritage rail journeys. The initiative is part of Indian Railways’ efforts to introduce hydrogen-based technology in passenger services while preserving the route’s historic character.

The Kalka-Shimla Railway, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, runs through the Shivalik hills, connecting Kalka in Haryana with Shimla in Himachal Pradesh. The 96-km route is known for its mountain scenery, tunnels, bridges and sharp curves. Its heritage trains remain a major attraction for tourists travelling to the hill station.

The proposed hydrogen-powered train is expected to operate on the existing narrow-gauge track. Hydrogen fuel-cell technology generates electricity through a chemical reaction between hydrogen and oxygen, with water as its primary by-product. The technology can reduce dependence on conventional diesel traction and help lower emissions from railway operations.

The development is part of Indian Railways’ broader efforts to explore hydrogen-powered trains on selected routes. The Kalka-Shimla service would bring the technology to a heritage railway setting, where introducing modern propulsion systems also requires attention to the route’s operating conditions and infrastructure.
