JSW Infrastructure has received permission to commence operations at Berth No. 7 and the associated backup area at Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port (SMP), Kolkata, strengthening the company’s presence in eastern India’s maritime and cargo handling sector.
The approval allows the company to begin commercial activities at the berth located at Netaji Subhas Dock, one of the major cargo handling facilities under SMP Kolkata. The development is expected to enhance cargo evacuation efficiency and improve logistics connectivity for eastern and northeastern India.
According to the company, the berth and backup area will support the handling of containerised cargo and other port-related logistics operations. The facility is expected to play an important role in strengthening multimodal trade movement and supply chain efficiency in the region.
The move aligns with JSW Infrastructure’s broader strategy of expanding its port and logistics network across India through capacity additions, terminal operations, and integrated logistics solutions. The company has been actively increasing its footprint across key cargo gateways to support growing industrial and trade demand.
Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port, formerly known as Kolkata Port Trust, is India’s oldest operating port and serves as a critical maritime gateway for eastern India, Nepal, Bhutan, and the northeastern states. The port handles a diverse range of cargo, including containers, coal, petroleum products, iron ore, fertilisers, and project cargo.
Industry observers believe the operationalisation of the berth could improve cargo turnaround time and support increased trade activity in the region, particularly as eastern India witnesses rising industrialisation and infrastructure expansion. The development also reflects continued private sector participation in India’s port modernisation and logistics infrastructure ecosystem.
