Jindal Stainless Ltd. has supplied 40% of the stainless steel used in the coaches of India’s first indigenous hydrogen-powered train, reinforcing its contribution to the country’s next-generation rail transportation projects. The train, flagged off by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on July 17, marks a significant milestone in India’s transition towards clean and sustainable mobility.
The company supplied its 301L austenitic stainless steel, which was used in manufacturing the train coaches. The high-strength grade offers an optimum combination of strength, corrosion resistance and weight reduction, making it well suited for modern railway applications. According to Jindal Stainless, the use of this material helped reduce the weight of each coach by nearly 2 tonnes, improving energy efficiency without compromising structural integrity.
Commenting on the development, Abhyuday Jindal, Managing Director, Jindal Stainless, said the company’s association with India’s first hydrogen-powered train reflects its commitment to supporting the country’s transition towards sustainable transportation through advanced stainless steel solutions. He added that the project aligns with the government’s vision of promoting indigenous manufacturing and green mobility.
The hydrogen-powered train operates on the Jind–Sonipat route in Haryana and generates electricity onboard using hydrogen fuel cells, emitting only water vapour during operation. Equipped with a 1,200-kW hydrogen fuel-cell propulsion system, the 10-coach train can accommodate around 2,600 passengers, making it one of the world’s largest hydrogen-powered passenger trains.
Jindal Stainless has been a key supplier of stainless steel for several flagship railway projects, including Vande Bharat Sleeper and Vande Metro trains. The latest contribution further strengthens the company’s role in advancing India’s railway modernisation programme through high-performance stainless steel solutions.
