The Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari has announced that India will soon begin deploying green hydrogen-powered trucks on ten national highway corridors as part of its clean mobility push.
Speaking at an industry event, Gadkari underlined that green hydrogen will play a decisive role in cutting down carbon emissions from the heavy transport sector, which remains one of the biggest contributors to vehicular pollution. The upcoming rollout will focus on freight movement, offering a sustainable alternative to diesel-powered trucks.
The selected highway corridors are expected to serve as pilot routes for large-scale adoption, connecting key logistics hubs and industrial clusters. This initiative aims to build a green hydrogen ecosystem in India, including refueling infrastructure, production facilities, and partnerships with manufacturers.
Gadkari highlighted that while the cost of green hydrogen remains high today, scaling up production and domestic technology development will make it commercially viable in the coming years. He added that India’s growing renewable energy base gives it a natural edge in becoming a global leader in hydrogen mobility solutions.
The move aligns with India’s broader targets under the National Green Hydrogen Mission, which seeks to position the country as a hub for hydrogen production, exports, and technology deployment.
If successful, the project could significantly reduce diesel imports, improve air quality, and set the stage for a future-ready green logistics network.
