India, Japan Agree to Operate Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train with Made-in-India Rolling Stock

India and Japan have agreed that the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail (MAHSR) corridor will eventually operate with domestically manufactured high-speed trains, marking a significant shift in the project’s localisation strategy. The decision was taken during discussions between officials of both countries as the flagship bullet train project progresses towards commissioning.

As part of the agreement, the corridor is expected to begin operations with a limited number of Japanese Shinkansen trainsets, after which Made-in-India rolling stock will be gradually introduced. The indigenous trains will be developed with Japanese technical collaboration and are expected to incorporate advanced high-speed rail technologies while being manufactured in India.

The move is aimed at strengthening India’s domestic railway manufacturing capabilities and supporting the government’s ‘Make in India’ initiative. Local production of high-speed trainsets is expected to reduce long-term procurement costs, build indigenous expertise and create a manufacturing ecosystem for future high-speed rail projects.

The Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail corridor, spanning 508 km, is India’s first bullet train project. A major portion of the civil construction, including viaducts, bridges and station infrastructure, is currently under execution, while track laying and systems installation have also gathered pace across several sections.

Officials said the adoption of domestically manufactured trains reflects the long-term vision of developing self-reliance in high-speed rail technology while continuing strategic cooperation with Japan. The project is expected to serve as the foundation for future high-speed rail corridors planned across the country.
