India is in talks with the United States and Iran after the waiver for Chabahar Port expired.

India is currently engaged in discussions with both the United States and Iran following the expiry of the sanctions waiver that allowed its operations at the strategically important Chabahar Port.

The waiver, which had enabled India to continue development and operations at the Iranian port despite US sanctions, expired on April 26, 2026. The Ministry of External Affairs stated that the matter is under active discussion with both countries, noting that the evolving geopolitical situation in West Asia has further complicated the issue.

India has been exploring multiple options to safeguard its interests in the project, including the possibility of temporarily restructuring or transferring its operational stake to avoid exposure to US sanctions.

The Chabahar Port project holds significant strategic importance for India, as it provides a vital trade route to Afghanistan and Central Asia while bypassing Pakistan. The country has invested around $120 million in the port’s development and operations.

With the waiver no longer in place, India is attempting to strike a balance between maintaining its strategic presence at Chabahar and complying with US sanctions on Iran. Discussions are focused on finding an interim arrangement that allows continuity of operations without triggering sanctions-related risks.

The situation is further influenced by ongoing regional tensions, including developments linked to the broader conflict in West Asia, which have added uncertainty to the future of the project.

Despite these challenges, India remains committed to the long-term significance of the Chabahar Port, viewing it as a key component of its regional connectivity strategy and economic outreach.
