India and Sweden have launched seven cutting-edge decarbonisation projects to transform India’s steel and cement industries.

Leading Indian companies, including Tata Steel, have partnered with Swedish technology innovators to launch seven ground-breaking projects aimed at driving decarbonisation in India’s steel and cement industries. As India progresses towards its 2070 net-zero targets, addressing emissions from hard-to-abate sectors will be crucial in ensuring the nation’s infrastructure development, industrial growth, and long-term climate goals are met, according to a press statement.

The projects include the use of hydrogen in rotary kilns for steelmaking, the recycling of steel slag to produce sustainable green cement, and the implementation of AI to drive decarbonisation in the cement industry. Seven innovative projects have been chosen to conduct pre-pilot feasibility studies in India as part of the Lead IT Industry Transition Partnership. The initiative is funded by the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India, in collaboration with the Swedish Energy Agency, the statement said.

Leading Indian and global companies, research institutions, and technology innovators are spearheading seven ground-breaking decarbonisation initiatives aimed at transforming India’s steel and cement sectors. The leading participants in this initiative include industry leaders such as Tata Steel, JK Cement, Ambuja Cements Ltd, Jindal Steel, Prism Johnson, and Cemvision, alongside Swedish technology pioneers Kanthal and Swerim. The statement mentioned that India’s premier institutes, namely IIT Bombay, IIT-ISM Dhanbad, IIT Bhubaneswar, IIT Hyderabad, and Datta Meghe College of Engineering, are key partners in these seven projects.
