India, ADB Sign $230 Million Loan Agreement for Chennai Water Infrastructure

The Government of India and the Asian Development Bank (ADB) have signed a $230 million loan agreement for the Chennai Climate-Resilient Water Security and Sewerage Project, aimed at expanding and modernising the city’s water supply and sanitation infrastructure. The agreement was signed on August 21, 2026, as part of efforts to strengthen urban infrastructure and improve climate resilience in Chennai.

The project will focus on improving access to reliable and climate-resilient water and sanitation services across the Greater Chennai area. It is expected to benefit around 4.5 million residents by expanding water supply networks, strengthening sewerage infrastructure and improving the overall reliability of urban water services.

The initiative will cover improvements across approximately 426 sq km of Chennai and will support the Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (CMWSSB) in strengthening its institutional capacity. The project also incorporates measures to improve climate resilience and the sustainable management of water resources.

The financing will support the development and modernisation of key water infrastructure, including distribution systems and sewerage facilities. The project is designed to help Chennai address growing urban demand while improving service quality and resilience against climate-related challenges.

The latest agreement adds to ADB’s continued support for urban infrastructure development in India, with the development bank also financing projects focused on water security, sanitation, urban resilience and sustainable city development.
