India has achieved a major infrastructure milestone by completing more than 200 kilometres of tunnels across strategically important road and railway projects. These tunnels are part of efforts to improve connectivity in difficult terrains, especially in mountainous and border regions where conventional surface transport is often disrupted by weather and geography.
The completed tunnel network spans several critical corridors aimed at ensuring all-weather connectivity, reducing travel time, and enhancing safety for both civilian and logistics movement. In addition to the tunnels already operational, around 40 kilometres of new tunnels are currently under construction or planned, indicating sustained momentum in underground infrastructure development.
Several of these tunnels form part of ambitious rail projects in the Himalayan region, where a large portion of alignments pass underground due to steep gradients and unstable geology. Notably, long rail tunnels constructed in Uttarakhand and other northern states are setting new benchmarks for engineering complexity and scale in India.
On the road infrastructure front, high-altitude highway tunnels are playing a crucial role in maintaining year-round access to remote regions that were earlier cut off during winter months. These projects significantly improve mobility for local populations while also strengthening strategic and defence preparedness.
The rapid expansion of tunnel construction reflects India’s growing expertise in advanced tunnelling technologies and project execution in challenging environments. Together, the completed and upcoming tunnels underscore the country’s focus on building resilient, future-ready transport infrastructure that supports economic growth, regional integration, and national security.
