Hindustan Construction Company (HCC) has secured a major infrastructure contract valued at approximately ₹901 crore from Northeast Frontier Railway for a significant tunnelling project on the Tupul-Imphal broad gauge rail line.
Under the terms of the agreement, HCC, in partnership with Vensar Constructions Company Ltd in the HCC-VCCL Joint Venture, will be responsible for the complete construction of New Tunnel-28, a key 3.5-kilometre stretch on the new broad gauge route. HCC holds a 65 per cent stake in the joint venture undertaking this assignment.
The scope of work includes end-to-end design, engineering and commissioning services for the tunnel. This encompasses constructing a broad-gauge ballast-less track, followed by the supply, installation, testing and commissioning of all necessary systems and structural elements required for safe and efficient railway operations. Additionally, the project involves installing tunnel ventilation systems as well as complete electromechanical works to support long-term use.
Beyond the tunnel itself, the contract also covers the development of approach roads and related ancillary infrastructure, ensuring seamless integration of the tunnel within the larger rail network. The project is an important component of ongoing efforts to expand and modernise rail connectivity in the northeastern region of India.
The award strengthens HCC’s presence in the railway infrastructure segment and builds on the company’s track record of delivering complex tunnelling and civil engineering projects across the country. With this latest contract, HCC is poised to play a notable role in advancing rail linkages that are expected to enhance mobility and support economic development in remote and strategically important areas.
