Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Limited (GRSE) has been accorded Navratna status by the Government of India, becoming one of the country’s select Central Public Sector Enterprises (CPSEs) to receive the prestigious classification.

The Department of Public Enterprises approved the upgrade following GRSE’s strong financial and operational performance. The move elevates the defence shipbuilder from its earlier Miniratna Category-I status and grants it greater financial and operational autonomy.

With Navratna status, GRSE will be able to make larger investments, pursue strategic partnerships, establish joint ventures and undertake acquisitions with reduced dependence on prior government approvals. The enhanced autonomy is expected to support the company’s expansion plans in shipbuilding, defence manufacturing and related maritime sectors.

Established in 1884 and headquartered in Kolkata, GRSE is one of India’s leading defence shipyards and operates under the Ministry of Defence. The company has played a key role in building warships and naval platforms for the Indian Navy and the Indian Coast Guard, delivering a wide range of frigates, corvettes, patrol vessels and amphibious ships.

The Navratna recognition comes at a time when GRSE has been strengthening its order book through multiple defence contracts and expanding its capabilities in advanced shipbuilding technologies. The company is currently engaged in the construction of several naval platforms under India’s indigenous defence manufacturing programme.

Navratna status is granted to CPSEs that demonstrate consistent financial performance and meet prescribed eligibility criteria related to profitability, net worth, turnover and operational efficiency. The classification provides greater flexibility in decision-making and is intended to help public sector enterprises compete more effectively in domestic and international markets.

The upgrade is expected to further strengthen GRSE’s role in India’s maritime and defence sectors as the country continues to focus on naval modernisation, self-reliance in defence production and the development of indigenous shipbuilding capabilities.
