Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL) has launched INS Srishti (Yard 1283), a Next-Generation Offshore Patrol Vessel (NGOPV) being built for the Indian Navy. The vessel was launched on October 27, 2026, at GSL’s facility in Vaddem, Goa, in a ceremony attended by senior officials from the Navy, the Ministry of Defence and the shipyard.

Sandeepa Sahay ceremonially launched the vessel, while Vishvajit Sahay, Secretary (Defence Finance), attended as the chief guest. Brajesh Kumar Upadhyay, Chairman and Managing Director of GSL, was also present.

The NGOPV programme is intended to strengthen the Indian Navy’s capabilities in maritime surveillance, search and rescue, protection of offshore assets, humanitarian assistance and disaster relief, and anti-piracy operations. The vessels will supplement the Navy’s existing offshore patrol vessel fleet and support operations across multiple maritime domains.

Construction of the next-generation patrol vessels is being undertaken concurrently at two shipyards: Goa Shipyard Limited in Goa and Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE) in Kolkata. The programme forms part of India’s broader efforts to expand indigenous naval shipbuilding and strengthen domestic defence manufacturing.

The vessel’s name, Srishti, is derived from Sanskrit and means “creation” or “the act of creating”. Its launch marks a construction milestone as the ship progresses towards eventual operational service with the Indian Navy.

Addressing the ceremony, Vishvajit Sahay highlighted the economic benefits of indigenisation, including its contribution to domestic industrial development and economic growth. He also acknowledged the Indian Navy’s role in advancing self-reliance in defence manufacturing and GSL’s contribution to the effort.

The programme aligns with the government’s Aatmanirbhar Bharat and Make in India initiatives, which aim to strengthen indigenous capabilities and expand India’s domestic defence industrial base.
