Digi Yatra Crosses 10 Crore Passenger Journeys, Expansion Planned Across 27 More Airports

Digi Yatra Foundation has announced that the Digi Yatra platform has crossed the milestone of 10 crore passenger journeys, marking a significant achievement in India’s digital aviation transformation and contactless airport travel ecosystem.

According to officials, the facial recognition-based passenger processing system has witnessed rapid adoption since its launch and is now being used extensively across major airports in the country to streamline passenger movement and reduce waiting times.

The Digi Yatra platform enables passengers to use facial authentication technology for seamless entry, security checks, and boarding processes without repeatedly presenting physical identity documents at multiple checkpoints.

Officials stated that the system is currently operational at 24 airports across India and has registered over 1.5 crore app downloads. With growing passenger adoption, the platform is now set to expand to 27 additional airports in the coming phases.

The upcoming expansion is expected to significantly increase the reach of the digital travel ecosystem and strengthen technology-driven passenger facilitation across India’s rapidly growing aviation network.

According to the Digi Yatra Foundation, the platform has been developed using privacy-focused architecture, with passenger data stored in encrypted format and shared only with user consent. Officials emphasised that biometric information is not centrally stored and is processed through a decentralised framework designed to enhance security and privacy.

Industry experts noted that Digi Yatra is emerging as one of the largest facial recognition-based aviation travel systems globally, supporting faster passenger processing while reducing congestion at airport terminals.

The platform forms a key part of the government’s broader digital infrastructure and smart mobility initiatives aimed at improving passenger convenience, operational efficiency, and airport capacity utilisation.

India’s aviation sector has been witnessing strong growth in passenger traffic, airport expansion, and infrastructure modernisation, leading to increasing adoption of digital technologies for managing higher passenger volumes efficiently.

Officials stated that the integration of biometric authentication, artificial intelligence, and digital identity systems is expected to play a crucial role in the future of airport operations as India continues expanding its aviation infrastructure.

The Digi Yatra ecosystem is also being aligned with emerging technologies and future airport development plans to support seamless multimodal travel experiences and improve overall passenger journey management.

Industry analysts believe the crossing of the 10 crore journey milestone highlights growing public acceptance of digital travel solutions and reflects the increasing role of technology in transforming India’s aviation sector into a more efficient, passenger-centric, and globally competitive ecosystem.
