Defence Acquisition Council Clears ₹3.25 Lakh Crore Rafale Jet Deal with France

The Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) has approved a major defence procurement package worth approximately ₹3.25 lakh crore for the acquisition of Rafale fighter aircraft from France, marking one of India’s largest defence deals aimed at strengthening the Indian Air Force’s combat capabilities.

Under the agreement, additional Rafale jets will be procured alongside associated weapons systems, support infrastructure and logistical arrangements to expand and modernise India’s tactical fighter fleet. The deal is expected to enhance the air force’s operational readiness and deterrence posture amid evolving regional security dynamics.

The DAC’s clearance reflects the government’s strategic priority to upgrade frontline combat capabilities with state-of-the-art aircraft that offer advanced avionics, weapon systems and multi-role performance. The Rafale aircraft, known for their air superiority, precision strike and networked operations, are expected to significantly augment the service’s aerial combat and strategic reach.

Officials said the package includes not only the aircraft but also associated weapons such as air-to-air and precision-guided munitions, spares, training systems, maintenance support and other integrated services necessary for sustained operations and lifecycle management.

The acquisition is likely to involve collaboration with French defence industry partners for production, maintenance and supply chain coordination, while strengthening long-term defence ties between the two countries. It will also support India’s efforts to ensure seamless integration of modern platforms into existing force structures and enhance joint operational capabilities.

The defence procurement approval by the DAC comes amid broader moves to modernise India’s armed forces, upgrade strategic deterrence, and keep pace with advancing technologies in aerial warfare. The expanded fighter fleet is expected to play a key role in maintaining air dominance across multiple theatres and supporting national security objectives.

Final contract negotiations, delivery schedules and financing arrangements will follow the DAC’s approval, with implementation expected to unfold over the coming years as production and logistics readiness mature.
