Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) has invited bids for the preparation of a Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the proposed extension of the Airport–Kilambakkam Metro corridor up to Chengalpattu, taking another step towards expanding metro connectivity to Chennai’s rapidly growing southern suburbs. The DPR will assess the technical and financial feasibility of the proposed extension and recommend the optimal alignment, station locations and implementation strategy.
The proposed extension is expected to cover around 25 km, linking Kilambakkam with Chengalpattu through key suburban and industrial locations. The study will include traffic and ridership assessments, engineering surveys, geotechnical investigations, land acquisition requirements, environmental impact analysis and cost estimates. The final alignment and station configuration will be determined after completion of the DPR.
The move comes even as the proposal to extend the existing Airport–Kilambakkam Metro line awaits approval from the Central Government. By initiating the DPR for the next leg, CMRL is preparing for the long-term expansion of the network to improve connectivity for commuters travelling between Chennai and Chengalpattu district.
The proposed extension is expected to improve access to major residential, commercial and industrial hubs along the GST Road corridor while providing seamless integration with Chennai’s expanding metro network. Once completed, the project is expected to ease road congestion, strengthen public transport connectivity and support the region’s future urban growth.
