The Central Government has approved a ₹222-crore coastal protection project for Visakhapatnam, aiming to safeguard the city’s coastline from erosion and rising sea levels. The project is part of the larger national initiative to strengthen India’s coastal infrastructure and enhance climate resilience in vulnerable regions.
According to officials, the project will focus on constructing sea walls, groynes, and other shoreline stabilization structures along critical stretches of the Visakhapatnam coast. Advanced coastal modeling and eco-engineering methods will be used to minimize environmental impact while improving long-term shoreline stability.
The initiative is expected to protect key areas, including residential zones, ports, and tourist hotspots, which have faced recurring erosion in recent years. It will also support sustainable coastal development and preserve the natural beauty of Visakhapatnam’s beaches.
Once implemented, the project will not only reduce the risks associated with coastal degradation but also help boost tourism and local livelihoods dependent on the city’s maritime economy.
