The Bihar government is planning a major riverfront highway network along the Ganga under an ambitious infrastructure expansion programme that includes the proposed 125-km Vishwamitra Path corridor, new Public-Private Partnership (PPP)-based expressway projects, and enhanced connectivity between Patna and Buxar.

The Vishwamitra Path project is being developed as a key western extension of Patna’s JP Ganga Path (Marine Drive) and is expected to significantly improve road connectivity between Patna, Ara, Maner, and Buxar while reducing travel time across western Bihar. The project is also expected to strengthen connectivity towards eastern Uttar Pradesh and the Purvanchal Expressway network.

According to state infrastructure planning documents, the proposed Vishwamitra Path corridor will cover nearly 90 kilometres between Buxar, Ara, and Maner along the Ganga river belt. The project forms part of a broader ₹5,500 crore riverfront highway development initiative that also includes the Ganga-Ambika Path and Narayani Path corridors.
Officials stated that the Bihar State Road Development Corporation (BSRDC) is currently identifying agencies for surveys, DPR preparation, and project structuring under the PPP model. Private participation is expected to play a major role in financing and executing the highway corridors, with toll-based revenue mechanisms proposed for cost recovery.

The Vishwamitra Path corridor is strategically important because it is expected to directly connect with the existing and upcoming Ganga riverfront infrastructure around Patna, including the expanding JP Ganga Path Phase-II project extending towards Koilwar. Authorities believe the combined network could create a high-speed alternative mobility corridor parallel to existing congested highway routes in the region.

The project is also expected to improve connectivity through the Sone river region by integrating with existing infrastructure such as the New Koilwar Bridge corridor and proposed future river crossing projects. Improved road links across the Sone and Ganga river systems are being viewed as critical for reducing bottlenecks between south and north Bihar while supporting freight movement and regional economic integration.

According to infrastructure reports, the Vishwamitra Path corridor has been designed not only as a transport project but also as a regional development initiative aimed at boosting tourism, trade, logistics, and economic activity along the Ganga belt districts of western Bihar. Buxar, which holds religious and historical importance linked to sage Vishwamitra and Ramayana-era heritage sites, is expected to emerge as a major beneficiary of the project.

The state government also expects the corridor to improve long-distance connectivity between Patna and Delhi by strengthening access to Uttar Pradesh’s expressway network through Buxar and Ghazipur. Existing infrastructure projects such as the Buxar–Ghazipur elevated corridor and Purvanchal Expressway are expected to integrate with Bihar’s upcoming riverfront highway system.

Alongside Vishwamitra Path, Bihar is also pushing forward with other major river connectivity projects including the Ganga-Ambika Path between Bidupur and Dighwara and the Narayani Path corridor in Gopalganj district. The state has increasingly focused on riverbank infrastructure development to improve transport efficiency in flood-prone regions while unlocking economic potential across districts adjoining the Ganga basin.

Officials indicated that the broader highway expansion initiative could substantially reduce congestion on existing highways and bridges, improve freight logistics, support agricultural supply chains, and create faster urban-rural connectivity across Bihar. The infrastructure push is also expected to stimulate real estate activity, industrial investment, and tourism development around the proposed corridors.

Industry experts believe the Vishwamitra Path project could become one of Bihar’s most transformative road infrastructure initiatives by creating a modern high-speed mobility corridor along the Ganga while integrating western Bihar more closely with national freight, industrial, and expressway networks.
