Union Home Minister Amit Shah is likely to inaugurate four major road infrastructure projects in Delhi on September 29, including the Barapullah Phase-3 elevated corridor, two new flyovers and the completed Mukarba Chowk underpass.

Delhi Public Works Department Minister Parvesh Sahib Singh said Shah will inaugurate the Barapullah Phase-3 corridor and the Mukarba Chowk underpass, while laying the foundation stones for the Modi Mill-Kalkaji flyover and the Savitri Cinema half-flyover.

The Barapullah Phase-3 corridor is the largest of the four projects. It is designed to provide signal-free connectivity between East and South Delhi, linking Mayur Vihar Phase-1 with AIIMS. The new elevated corridor will merge with the existing Barapullah flyover at Sarai Kale Khan, taking the overall stretch to around 9 km.

The Barapullah Phase-3 project was originally approved in 2014 and work began in 2015, with completion initially scheduled for 2017. The project subsequently faced delays, and its revised cost has now risen to around ₹1,635 crore.

In South Delhi, the PWD is taking up the Modi Mill-Kalkaji flyover project to extend the existing Modi Mill flyover towards the Kalkaji Temple flyover. The work will also include additional half-flyovers at key intersections to create a 7.2-km signal-free corridor up to IIT Gate.

The corridor will have three lanes in both directions and is intended to provide uninterrupted movement at key junctions, including the Captain Gaur Marg-Outer Ring Road and Outer Ring Road-GK-II Road intersections.

The second flyover project is the Savitri Cinema half-flyover. The structure will be a 435-metre, three-lane single carriageway constructed alongside the existing Savitri Cinema flyover. The project had received approval from UTTIPEC in 2017 but was delayed due to pending financial and administrative approvals.

The Modi Mill and Savitri Cinema flyover projects have a combined estimated cost of ₹371.75 crore. The Savitri Cinema project is intended to improve movement towards Nehru Place, Okhla and surrounding areas by expanding the existing single carriageway into a dual carriageway.

The fourth project, the Mukarba Chowk underpass in North Delhi, has already been completed. It comprises three underpasses near Gate No. 3 of the Haiderpur Badli Mor Metro station on the Outer Ring Road, in the Shalimar Bagh assembly constituency.

Construction of the Mukarba Chowk underpass had stopped in 2022 during the Covid-19 pandemic and was subsequently resumed. Its inauguration is scheduled along with the other three road projects on September 29.

The four projects form part of Delhi’s ongoing road infrastructure works aimed at improving connectivity and reducing traffic bottlenecks at major junctions and corridors across the city.
