“Trident’s focus is to provide application-specific solutions rather than one-size-fits-all products. A mining customer operating his machines in hard rock conditions has different priorities than a warehouse running forklifts on smooth concrete or skid steers working on a construction site. Our responsibility is to understand the operational realities and manufacture tyres that boost our customers’ productivity and reduce total cost of ownership (TCO).”
Trident serves construction, material handling, aerial access and mining, where machines often work continuously under severe conditions. Are you seeing a shift in customer expectations from simply buying a durable tyre to seeking measurable gains in machine productivity, safety and operating economics?
Yes, absolutely; and this shift has been quite pronounced over the last few years. Fleet owners and machine operators now treat tyres as strategic assets, assessing how their performance directly impacts bottom-line economics, worksite safety and day-to-day equipment uptime
Equipment owners are increasingly aware that unplanned downtime, even a few hours lost to a tyre-related issue, can have a cascading impact on project timelines, especially in sectors like construction and material handling where machines are often deployed on tight schedules. Second, with rising fuel and maintenance costs, customers are far more conscious of how tyre design affects rolling resistance, heat build-up and consequently, fuel efficiency and component wear across the machine.
Safety has also become a much bigger part of the conversation, particularly in aerial access and mining applications, where tyre failure isn’t just a cost issue; it is a serious safety hazard for operators working at heights or in confined, hazardous environments.
Trident has built its identity around industrial tyres and tracks rather than following a conventional mass-market tyre model. How has this application-focused approach shaped the company’s journey, and what do you see as the biggest strengths of specialising in such demanding segments?
Trident’s focus is to provide application-specific solutions rather than one-size-fits-all products. A mining customer operating his machines in hard rock conditions has different priorities than a warehouse running forklifts on smooth concrete or skid steers working on a construction site. Our responsibility is to understand the operational realities and manufacture tyres that boost our customers’ productivity and reduce total cost of ownership (TCO). By integrating innovative design features, developing application-specific compounds, and creating unique tread patterns, we design tires that address common challenges like frequent punctures, rapid wear, damage, and blowout risks, ensuring superior performance and safety.
Underpinning all of this is rigorous, in-house testing. Our fully equipped lab runs abrasion resistance, tear resistance, fatigue, and other critical tests on every new compound we develop. Any tyre built with a novel compound or construction is first evaluated on in-house test rigs to assess heat build-up, structural design, and load capacity. From there, it’s fitted onto our in-house test fleet, where it’s run under real operating conditions to validate on-machine performance before it’s released to a customer.
We have a customer-first, purpose-driven strategy to drive business growth, which includes developing innovative products and specific offerings for both OEM & AFM aimed at making Trident the preferred supply partner.
Your TRAXTER range spans solid, pneumatic and foam-filled tyres, each suited to different operating conditions. When customers evaluate tyres today, how should they balance purchase price against uptime, replacement frequency, machine utilisation and overall cost per operating hour?
Evaluating tyre selection requires shifting the lens from upfront purchase price to total value delivered over the machine’s lifecycle. Acquisition cost represents only a fraction of what a tyre truly costs over its operating life; downtime, frequent replacement and lost productivity quickly dwarf initial savings.
Customers can have varying operational priorities and we strongly recommend users to evaluate in the following chronology
- How critical Is tyre failure to my operations in terms of safety, machine uptime, roject timeline & productivity?
- What’s my duty cycle i.e. How long & how hard does my machine work every day?
- What is the turnaround time for tyre replacement?
- What is my tyre TCO or CPH?
- What is my tyre acquisition cost?
Matching Tyre Architecture to Operating Conditions
| Tyre Type | Best-Fit Applications | Key Trade-Offs |
| Pneumatic Tyres | Light-duty operations, smooth surfaces, and low-puncture-risk environments prioritizing operator ride comfort. | Lowest initial acquisition cost, but scrap, recycling, or demolition debris causes frequent punctures that rapidly evaporate upfront savings. |
| Foam-Filled Tyres | High-traction requirements, moderate speeds (up to 50 km/h), and longer cycle hauls (>2 km) where solids are not viable. | Puncture-proof safety with pneumatic-like footprint and ride quality; requires higher upfront investment and specialized servicing. |
| Solid Tyres | High-load, low-speed, short-haul cycles in confined, harsh, high-debris operating environments. | Comparable upfront cost to foam-filling, but delivers 3× to 5× the service life, drastically minimizing maintenance and achieving the lowest overall CPH. |
An idle machine is a liability, not an asset. Fewer replacements mean that costs associated with re-purchase, downtime, inventory and repair are significantly reduced. The tyre that looked more expensive on day one is often the better choice when you measure it in cost per operating hour. Solid tyres are therefore a viable cost-effective alternative for the customer to seriously consider.
Skid-steer loaders often operate in environments where punctures, abrasive surfaces and debris can quickly translate into lost machine hours. What engineering considerations have gone into your latest solid skid-steer tyre solutions, and where do you see the strongest demand for these products?
A Skid Steer Loader is the “Swiss Army Knife” of compact construction machines, with an ability to turn within its own footprint, enabling it to work in tight spaces can come in handy in a variety of operations such as digging, moving landscaping and building materials, grading, loading trucks and even jackhammering cement. Since operating conditions vary vastly, we have developed application-specific tread patterns and rubber compounds that offer customers tyres best suited to their needs to maximize life and uptime. Some notable highlights include;
1/ Non-Directional R4 traction tyre for Boom Lifts & Skid Steer Loaders for which we hold a US Design patent
2/ Extra deep L5 smooth tyres with a highly wear-resistant tread for loaders used in steel plants, glass & recycling scrap industries
3/ Solid tyres with specially designed sidewall apertures that absorb shocks, reducing machine maintenance and improving operator comfort
We see the highest demand in zero-tolerance environments where flat tyres directly disrupt project schedules in demanding applications such as construction, mining, port handling, recycling, steel making, solid waste management, scrap handling, etc.
Beyond the tyre itself, Trident also offers solutions such as ready-to-fit assemblies and over-the-tyre tracks. How important is ease of installation, maintenance and replacement in helping equipment owners reduce downtime, and how are customers responding to this more complete approach?
Our tyres are supplied as ready-to-fit assemblies which consist of the tyre & rim. Site operators can bolt on the ready-to-use tyre assemblies to the equipment directly in the field using standard tools, turning what used to be hours or days of lost machine availability into a quick, minutes-long swap.
To augment the capability of skid steer loaders, over-tyre-tracks (OTTs) are developed to significantly increase traction and flotation and enable skid steer loaders to operate in virtually any service environment. OTTs consist of pivotally interconnected reinforced steel segments that are looped over the tyres, and the open ends are fastened to make an endless track chain/belt, thus providing tracked mobility with high flotation, usually within an hour. OTTs thus bridge the gap between wheeled and tracked mobility by converting the wheeled skid loader into a tracked loader.
The market reception has been positive. It is an end-to-end approach resulting in protected project timelines, greater asset utilization, multi-terrain fleet flexibility and overall increased efficiency.
