The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has expanded its digital FASTag Local Pass facility to 121 toll plazas across the country, allowing eligible local commuters to apply for their monthly passes online through the Rajmargyatra mobile app. The move eliminates the need for physical visits to toll plazas and manual submission of supporting documents.

The digital facility is available to eligible residents living within a 20-km radius of a participating toll plaza. Once approved, the monthly Local Pass allows unlimited travel through the respective toll plaza during the validity period, subject to applicable rules.

The initiative was first introduced in July 2026 at the Mundka–Bakkarwala Toll Plaza on Delhi’s Urban Extension Road-II (UER-II). Following the initial rollout, NHAI has expanded the service to 121 toll plazas and plans to bring additional plazas under the digital system in the coming months. A key change under the new system is the shift from manual document verification to digital verification. Information required to establish eligibility can be verified through government digital platforms and linked records, reducing paperwork and limiting the need for manual intervention.

The system integrates digital services including DigiLocker and VAHAN, along with GIS-based validation, to verify details such as residential address, vehicle information and FASTag linkage. This is intended to make the application process faster and more transparent while reducing errors associated with manual verification.

For regular local users of national highways, the change could significantly simplify access to the Local Pass. Instead of travelling to a toll plaza, submitting address-related documents and waiting for verification, eligible users can complete the process digitally through the Rajmargyatra platform.

The move also supports NHAI’s broader effort to make highway operations more technology-driven and citizen-centric. FASTag has already transformed toll collection by enabling automatic electronic payments, and the digitisation of Local Pass services extends that approach beyond toll transactions to related user services.

From an operational perspective, reducing physical applications can also ease the administrative burden at toll plazas. Digital verification can minimise queues, paperwork and manual processing, allowing toll-plaza personnel to focus more closely on highway operations and customer service.

The initiative is particularly relevant for commuters who cross the same toll plaza frequently for work, business or other regular travel. For such users, the Local Pass provides a more convenient alternative to paying individual toll charges on every journey, while the digital process makes obtaining the pass easier.

NHAI’s expansion of the service to 121 toll plazas represents another step in the digitisation of India’s highway network. As the facility is extended to more locations, the integration of FASTag, digital identity and vehicle databases could increasingly reduce physical paperwork across highway-related services.

The development therefore goes beyond simply moving the Local Pass online. It reflects a broader transition towards paperless tolling, automated verification and digitally enabled highway services, supporting a more seamless experience for frequent road users.
