Barely two months after commencing operations, the South Coast Railway (SCoR) Zone has emerged as one of Indian Railways’ fastest-growing zones, with infrastructure projects worth ₹54,479 crore currently under execution and an additional ₹70,865 crore worth of projects in the pipeline. The zone is driving an ambitious expansion programme aimed at enhancing capacity, improving passenger services and strengthening operational efficiency across its network.
At present, SCoR is executing five new railway line projects and 24 multi-tracking works, while simultaneously constructing more than 300 Road Over Bridges (ROBs) and Road Under Bridges (RUBs) to improve safety and connectivity. The zone has also secured approval for several major projects, including a ₹300 crore Visakhapatnam Yard remodelling project, a ₹1,205 crore Guntakal–Ballari quadrupling project, and ₹20 crore for crowd management infrastructure at Tirupati.
Infrastructure modernisation has gathered pace with the commissioning of yard remodelling works at Narsapur–Vijayawada and Garudaballi–Visakhapatnam, expansion of automatic block signalling in the Nellore–Telamanchi section and the installation of the Kavach train protection system on nearly 100 locomotives. The first 100-km Kavach-equipped section is targeted for commissioning by the end of 2026. Passenger-focused initiatives have also gained momentum, with three Amrit Bharat Stations already inaugurated and redevelopment progressing at 70 additional stations.
Operational since June 1, 2026, the South Coast Railway Zone now comprises four divisions, covering approximately 3,532 route kilometres and 6,455 track kilometres. During the period, it recorded originating passenger revenue of ₹671 crore, handled 29.4 million originating passengers, generated overall originating earnings of ₹2,493 crore, and maintained annual freight loading of over 100 million tonnes. The zone has also announced plans for additional third and fourth railway lines, extensive yard remodelling at Simhachalam North and Renigunta, and further capacity augmentation to support growing passenger and freight demand.
