Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the Alluri Sitarama Raju International Airport at Bhogapuram in Andhra Pradesh on August 1, marking the commissioning of one of India’s newest greenfield international airports. Developed under a public-private partnership (PPP) model, the airport is expected to significantly improve air connectivity across North Andhra, covering the districts of Visakhapatnam, Vizianagaram and Srikakulam.

Built at an investment of around ₹5,640 crore, the airport has been designed to handle six million passengers annually in its first phase, with a long-term master plan to expand capacity to 40 million passengers per year. The facility features a 3,800-metre runway capable of accommodating wide-body aircraft, a modern passenger terminal and dedicated cargo infrastructure to support both passenger and freight operations.

The project is expected to serve as a catalyst for economic growth in the region by boosting tourism, trade, logistics, industrial investment and aerospace-related activities. State authorities have also planned complementary infrastructure, including improved road connectivity and commercial development around the airport, to maximise its economic impact.

The inauguration marks a major milestone in Andhra Pradesh’s aviation infrastructure expansion and is expected to reduce pressure on the existing Visakhapatnam airport while supporting the state’s long-term vision of developing North Andhra as an important economic and logistics hub.
