Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has urged Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari to declare Mandi Road in South Delhi a National Highway and transfer its development to the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI). The proposal aims to improve regional connectivity, ease traffic congestion and facilitate integrated infrastructure development across the National Capital Region (NCR).
In a letter addressed to the Union Minister, the Chief Minister described the 8.8-km Mandi Road as a strategically important transport corridor connecting Mehrauli–Gurugram Road (NH-148A) near Chhatarpur Metro Station with the Gurugram–Faridabad Road at the Delhi–Haryana border. The corridor serves as a vital link for commuters travelling between Delhi, Gurugram and Faridabad and plays a key role in facilitating inter-state traffic movement.
Gupta stated that bringing the road under NHAI would enable the preparation of an integrated development plan, ensure the adoption of uniform engineering standards and accelerate the upgradation of the corridor. She noted that the move would improve traffic flow, reduce travel time and enhance connectivity across the Delhi–NCR region, while also supporting regional economic development.
The Chief Minister also highlighted the favourable environment for infrastructure development created through coordination between the Central and Delhi governments, expressing confidence that the proposed upgrade would strengthen the capital’s transport network and complement ongoing highway expansion initiatives.
If approved, the transfer of Mandi Road to NHAI is expected to pave the way for its systematic expansion and modernisation, reinforcing its role as a key arterial route connecting Delhi with neighbouring urban and economic centres in Haryana.
